Water heaters are designed to keep hot water at a constant temperature for long periods of time. They’re also used in homes that have no central heating system. But when a water heater fails, it can cause serious problems.
If you have a water heater, you should understand how it works so you can fix any issues as soon as possible. Here’s some basic information about water heaters.
Causes of Failure
There are several reasons why a water heater might not work properly. One common reason is that the tank has been damaged by corrosion. Corrosion occurs when minerals in the water react with the metal parts of the water heater. This reaction creates an acid that eats away at the metal parts of the heater. Another common cause of failure is a leaky valve. Leaky valves allow too much cold water into the hot water side of the system. This can damage the heating element inside the tank.
How To Fix A Leaking Water Heater
If you suspect that your water heater is leaking, turn off the main water supply to the house and call a plumber immediately. You should also check the temperature gauge on the top of the unit. It should read between 120°F and 140°F. If it reads below 100°F, then there is a problem.
Preventing Leaks From Occurring In The First Place
There are several things that can cause leaks in a water heater. One common reason is corrosion. Corrosion occurs when minerals build up inside the tank. This buildup can occur because of improper maintenance, or because of an old water heater. Another common cause of leaks is a cracked tank. How To Test For Leaks
If you suspect that there might be a leak, test for it by using a water meter. Turn off the main valve at the house and then turn on the faucet. Wait until the water starts flowing before turning off the faucet. You should see how much water flows through the faucet. If there is no flow, then there is a leak somewhere.
Examine the Tank for Discoloration or Corrosion
Inspecting the water tank is the first step to finding out if your water heater is damaged. If you notice any discoloration or corrosion on the exterior of the tank, then this can indicate there are issues on the inside as well. Be sure to check both the outside and inside parts of the tank and look for signs of rust, peeling paint, or any other red flags that your water heater may need repair
Check If There is Water Leaking From the Tank
A tell-tale sign that your water heater is damaged is if there is any water leaking from the tank. Look for small puddles of water beneath the unit, or if you notice wet spots on the walls around it. If you find that there is an issue with your water heater, turn off the main switch immediately to minimize any further damage.
Listen for Strange Noises Coming From the Water Heater
Another sign that your water heater is damaged is if you start hearing strange noises coming from it. Popping, rumbling, and gurgling sounds could mean that there is a sediment build-up happening in the tank and it’s time for a flush. High-pitched screeching or squealing means that there is something wrong with the heating element or its wiring. If either of these noises can be heard, it’s best to hire an experienced technician to make the repairs quickly.
Make Sure Hot Water Is Still Available in Sufficient Amounts

If you notice that you no longer have an abundant supply of hot water or that it’s taking a long time for it to heat up, these could be signs of damage and repairs being needed. You should also pay attention to the temperature of the hot water – if it’s too hot, then there may be a problem with the thermostat.
Investigate Any Unpleasant Smells Coming from Your Faucets, Showers & Drains
A damaged water heater can cause unpleasant smells and odors from your faucets, showers, and drains. If you start to notice an unpleasant smell coming from any of these areas, it could be a sign that there’s a problem with your water heater. Be sure to check inside the tank if you’re able to do so – rust or corrosion could be present, a possible sign of damage.
