The toilet is one of the most complex appliances in your home. When something goes wrong with a toilet, such as water leaking at the base or the handle failing to flush, it’s best to have a proper understanding of the toilet replacement and repair you’re looking at.
Wax RingIf you find that you have water pooling around the base of the toilet, it could mean a few things. The first issue could be a wax ring going bad around the base of the toilet. The base of the toilet, which feeds into the waste line, generally has a wax ring that creates a seal around the base of the toilet. If one of these rings goes bad, you need to shut off the water supply line to the toilet, flush excess water and remove the closet bolts that secure the toilet bowl to the phalange on the floor. Once you remove the bolts, carefully lift the toilet up and dump the excess water out. Once this is done, carefully place the toilet on its side, and use a screwdriver or putty knife to remove the old wax ring and grime from the bottom of the toilet. Clean the area thoroughly and place the new wax ring over the waste line. Replace the old closet bolts in the slots in the phalange and carefully place the toilet back over the wax ring. Make sure your closet bolts go through the holes in the base of the toilet bowl. Take your measurements to ensure the toilet is square with the wall then carefully retighten the closet bolts, if you overtighten the closet bolts, you risk cracking the bowl. Reattach the supply line and turn the water back on. Check all around the toilet to make sure there aren’t any leaks, if you don’t spot any then you have a successful toilet replacement!!
